Kia ora koutou -

Thanks for everyone who came along to the 2024 AGM earlier this month.

We adopted an updated constitution at the 2024 AGM this month. There were several changes as required by the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. We’ll be working to adapt our systems to reflect the new settings for membership that we agreed to. We will reach out again with further info on what you may need to do to manage your support soon.

Check out the slides from the Chair’s Report:

It has been an action packed year, with a lot of construction happening, which is great.

Unfortunately the nay-sayers have noticed things changing on our streets and are starting to grumble (even more). The disastrous and misguided changes being made by the Minister of Transport are making things even more difficult than usual. We need to stay the course and keep pushing for better cycling conditions in Wellington.

We hope folks stay safe and positive, and get involved to keep our vision for a better city on the right path. 🚲😉

Kia kaha whānau! Keep turning those pedals. The greatest advocacy action for achieving better biking is people just riding their bikes for everyday journeys, so please keep getting out there!

Calls to action

We 💗 Paneke Pōneke

Cycling is under attack - let WCC know: We 💗 Paneke Pōneke

Our council is under terrible pressure given recent events and the national-level political climate. Councillors need to hear from Wellingtonians who are making use of all the new cycling infrastructure how important it is to keep rolling out the network.

Please also reach out to any of your friends or colleagues who support better cycling and might not yet tune into CW newsletters; and ask them to tell the council how great it is seeing the improving cycling facilities around town.

We can absolutely empathise that this is likely not the first (or even 73rd maybe!) time you might have expressed your views, but this situation for council may threaten progress. We need to be positively vocal to ensure the council remains courageous and decisive in favour of safer, healthier streets.

Some ways to make your voice heard yourself:

Emails!

Tag councillors, the Mayor, MPs, and the Minister in any of your social media posts showing you and yours enjoying the new facilities.

Ride your bike!

Celebrate 30 years of progress

Saturday 30 November 2024

Cycle Wellington has been pedaling progress for 30 years!! Let’s celebrate how far we’ve come!

There is a ton going for bikes in our city, and there is a lot of exciting change on the ground under way.

We’d love it if you join us in celebrating the huge effort that has gone into making biking better in Poneke over the last three decades. We really appreciate that this mahi is the result of a huge range of people, communities, organisations, and professions. We couldn’t do this without it being a true team effort.

We’re keen for past supporters, members, politicians and workers who have contributed to come together, so if you know of someone else who was a part of the kaupapa - please extend the invitation and encourage them to come too.

When and what wheel be doing

4pm - Group rides into the city from Karori, Island Bay, Seatoun, Petone, and Tawa. (more details for these soon!)

5pm - Gather on the Wellington Waterfront for games, byo picnic, music and activities.

Picnics in Parks

11am - 12:30pm weekly on Fridays

Changing locations

Every Friday (weather allowing) we meet up somewhere in central city Wellington in an on-street parking space. Join us for a chat and coffee, and sometimes: knitting, board games, and puppies, and help passers-by rethink the use of public space. We’re usually near a café, so come support a local business for your lunch as well.
