NZTA rule change consultation: CAN submission guide

https://www.cyclewellington.org.nz/nzta_rule_changes_submission_guide

NZTA Waka Kotahi is seeking feedback on five changes to the Road Rules. The changes overall make ‘commonsense’ improvements to the road rules – with one potential big win for cycling, but only if it gets a tweak.

The proposed changes cover passing distances, e-scooter use of bike lanes, kids biking on footpaths, and more.

That potential big win? The passing distance needs to kick in on more roads and at lower speeds - both to be sufficiently safe for the situation, and to make it easier to explain, educate, expect, and enforce.

Our friends in the national Cycling Action Network have written a submission guide. They reckon the 1.5m requirement should kick in on roads with 50km/h limits, not only 70km/h and up - or even on roads of all speeds. That would be easier to understand, and in line with the current advice in the Road Code.
