Calls to action
Karori bike lanes are under attack
A recent decision at council instructs officers to investigate changing or removing the recently built separated lane on Glenmore Street near the Botanic Gardens. This is of course nonsensical. The new route is a critical component of the emerging network, and a lot of options were carefully considered to get to where we are. The effectiveness of the new configuration needs to be properly evaluated as a part of the wider bike network performance, and given enough time to gather quality usage data.
Take action:
Talk to your local Councillors, especially if you use this route often. Tell them how much you value bike lanes, and why it's a bad idea to destroy what they have just built. We all deserve safe streets.
Contact Councillors by phone, in person, or email.

Please support CAN
Cycling Action Network is facing financial shortfalls that are forcing difficult decisions around staffing. They need to raise $30,000 in three months to resource future operations.
Can you donate today or sign up to contribute monthly to ensure cycle advocacy continues at a national level? Please also share with and encourage your friends and networks to help grow CAN’s membership and support base.

Thorndon Quay
From Wellington City Council:
We’ve been getting a lot of comments and questions from cyclists commuting via Thorndon Quay. Here are some frequently asked questions:
Q: Can the cycleway be used both ways now?
No. Until more of the separators are installed, people heading north should stay on the road until they are past Tinakori Road and can move over onto the existing two-way bike lane. All road users should share the lane as they would on any other road without a designated cycle lane.
Q: It seems there's still a cycle lane on the northbound lane in some places but not in others. Why is that?
When the work is completed there will be no cycle lane at all on the northbound lane. At the moment, the completed sections of the road reflect this new design and the unfinished sections do not. We are working rapidly to finish installing the separators and surfacing that will mean we can open the cycle lane. Meanwhile, we strongly encourage motorists to be aware of cyclists in the northbound lane and share the road with care.
Q: Why are some people parking in the new cycle lane?
The partially finished state of the road can be confusing for people, especially if they are not frequent visitors to Thorndon Quay. When the work is complete, the cycleway will be clearly painted with signage in place, making it more obvious no parking is allowed. For the time being we are putting out cones to show there is no parking and will report people who park in the new bike lane. If you notice cars parked in the bike lane, please report the issue to the Council.

Other projects in the network
Luxford Street implementation is complete. Completing the Newtown to Berhampore route is a big milestone for the team.
The amount of feedback coming in for Thorndon Connections is still low. Please provide your feedback. Even just some positive responses are really helpful to send in.
Stage Two of Evans Bay build is underway with work progressing on sea walls. Further work for this is closer to starting.

Newtown Festival bike parking was heaving
Thanks to all who volunteered to help make bike parking at this year’s Newtown Festival such a success. We hope this signals the new normal for accommodating people arriving by bike to this wonderful event. Congratulations to the organisers!
