General advice from CW on the Parking Scheme feedback
Supporting the parking scheme will help free up space for safer biking in the area. If you want to contribute to this section, we encourage you to support it and comment about how you think the scheme will improve things for you and your family, e.g.: clearer roads, and more available parking for short visits due to the P120, less commuter parking crowding on work days.
Blackbridge Road

Comments about the proposed changes on Blackbridge Road:
I support pedestrian upgrades, bike lanes on Blackbridge Road, and parking removal.
I prefer protected bike lanes on both sides of Blackbridge Road. Painted bike lanes and sharrows do not provide adequate protection. Less-confident riders are likely to hug the left of the lane downhill, in the dangerous car-door zone.

Comments about the proposed changes on the section of Wadestown Road between Pitt Street and Blackbridge Road
I support these plans, but they do not go far enough. The council changed its process in the recent Long Term Plan meaning that this route will likely never see the needed ‘transformational’ change with the bike network rollout. This makes it important to come up with more robust designs now.

I support these plans, but they do not go far enough. The council changed its process in the recent Long Term Plan meaning that this route will likely never see the needed transformational change with the bike network rollout. This makes it important to come up with more robust designs now.
Specifically, these plans lack:
- physical separation of the uphill bike lane. Paint is not protection. I like the low physical separation on much of Crawford Road for example.
- appropriate 30kph speed limits on parts of the route where protected cycling infrastructure is not provided
- wide enough bike lanes. The widths of the bike lanes are counting the gutter but this is not usable space when the curb profile is not cycle friendly and poses a pedal strike risk.
- bus stop bypasses. Bus stops interrupting the bike lane, such as at the intersection with Lytton Street, are unfortunate. I would prefer the bus to wait in the traffic lane when stopped and a bypass for people on bikes provided.
- effective safety from dooring risk. Where car parking is being retained, I would prefer it to be positioned on the uphill side as slower uphill speeds are safer.
I recommend changing the designs to eliminate these issues.
A route with an unprotected bike lane on only one side does not create a connected network. People who are confident riding with traffic will benefit from the proposed design, but I doubt that the majority of people will feel comfortable travelling among 50 km/h heavy vehicles. I doubt we will see as many more people choosing to ride their bikes without improvements. Let's build for the many, not the few.
I don't like sharing a busy lane with traffic at 50 km/h. If protected bike lanes on both sides of the route can't fit, please reduce the speed limit to 30 km/h anywhere people on bikes have to share the traffic lane.
This is a good step in the right direction, but I urge the Council to improve the plans as suggested earlier and to at least add physical protection on the uphill bike lane before going ahead.
