Submission guide for Kilbirnie and Thorndon bike lanes

Molesworth St

Are you making a 5-minute oral submission to the Council? Hearings are scheduled on 20, 21 and 24 April, at WCC, 113 The Terrace L16.

Thanks for having your say. Here's our tips:

  1. Be clear that you support the plans, and why.
  2. Tell your story - where you ride, how will the new lanes help you.
  3. How could plans be better?
e.g.: Onepu Rd needs continuous protected bike lanes, not a painted lane at the south end. Paint is not protection.
e.g.: where's the connection from Kilbirnie bike lanes to Crawford Rd? Please connect this gap.
  4. Thank Councillors and staff for their work. Ask for them to keep going on building a network of protected bike lanes.
  5. Avoid spending time rebutting points made by others. Just tell your story.

You may have time to respond to a question or two from Councillors.

Your voice makes a difference. Please have your say on bike lane plans for Kilbirnie and Thorndon. We think the plans are pretty good, and need to be delivered with some small changes.

Feedback for both projects is closed.

The Council has two options for feedback: quick, or detailed. Here's our two minute guide for quick feedback for each project:

Kilbirnie Connections

  1. Go to https://www.transportprojects.org.nz/current/kilbirnie-connections/

  2. Choose "Share your feedback now". This takes you to a Survey Monkey page.

  3. At “Which proposal/s would you like to have your say on?”, select "both" and “next”.

  4. Select "Quick" and “next”.

  5. Have your say:

Question: Do you support the overall proposed changes to the Kilbirnie Connections area?

We suggest you select "Strongly support".

Add your comments about why you think this. Use your own words - a personal comment can be really powerful. Comments show up in the 'What we're hearing' panel for the project so they're a great way to make your support visible. You could say something along the lines of:

"We deserve safe and attractive streets. I support plans to redesign Kilbirnie streets to make it safer and easier for people to walk, ride, scooter, or use public transport. I support changes to on-street parking, and use of 30 kmh limits to make this happen."

Question: Do you support the proposed speed changes in the Kilbirnie connections area?

We suggest you select "Strongly support".

Thorndon Connections

If you're commenting on both projects, these questions follow on directly after Kilbirnie. Otherwise start from the Thorndon Connections page and follow steps 2-5 as above.

Question: Do you support the overall proposed changes to the Thorndon Connections area?

We suggest you select "Strongly support".

Add your comments about why you think this. Use your own words - a personal comment can be really powerful. Comments show up in the 'What we're hearing' panel for the project so they're a great way to make your support visible. For example:

"We deserve safe and attractive streets. I support plans to redesign Kilbirnie streets to make it safer and easier for people to walk, ride, scooter, or use public transport. I support changes to on-street parking, and use of 30 kmh limits to make this happen.

Rather than the two-way bike lane on Molesworth St, I would prefer a protected one-way lane on Molesworth St heading north, and a protected one-way bike lane all the way along Mulgrave St, connecting to Thorndon Quay.

I would like a direct connection from Hill St to Museum St, to access The Terrace and Bowen St."

Question: How important is it to rebalance our existing street space to make it safer and easier for people to walk, ride, scooter, or use public transport?

We suggest you select "Very important".
